Baseball Legend Tommy John To Walk For Charity

Baseball legend Tommy John is lending a hand to charity in a big way, in honor of his late son.

He’s put together a team for a special walking event in Chicago to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Last year, Team Taylor was the top fundraising team for the Chicago walk. This year’s goal is to raise $20,000 in Taylor’s honor.

From the fundraising page: "On September 24, our team will be joining with thousands of people to walk in AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Community Walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and we would appreciate any support that you give for this worthwhile cause.

“Last year, Team Taylor rallied for the first time in memory of our beautiful friend, brother, son, babysitter, teacher, and more. Taylor John touched each of our lives in indescribably profound ways. His spirit, love, humor, and talent live on through the gifts he so generously offered each of us.

“On March 9, 2010, Taylor passed away. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has given us the opportunity to create some hope out of our immense loss and sadness. Taylor used to wear a red bracelet that read, “Never Give Up.” In honor of his strength and heart, we refuse to.

“Since last year’s walk, members of Team Taylor have lost other friends and family members to suicide, making our mission ever more pertinent. We walk to shed light on suicide, depression, bipolar disorder and substance abuse; we will not let these often stigmatized terms remain in the darkness.”
