It's time to break the meat dress out of deep storage, or perhaps polish up the space egg, because Lady Gaga has another awards show to attend.

On Thursday morning (July 14), her "Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden" HBO special picked up five Primetime Emmy Award nominations, top-lined by a nod for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. In that category, Gaga will face off against the annual Kennedy Center Honors telecast and a trio of rather, uh, unique challengers: Carrie Fisher, Bette Midler and Pee-Wee Herman, each of whom earned noms for their respective HBO specials.

The "Monster Ball" special also earned a nomination for Outstanding Directing (Gaga's creative director, Laurieann Gibson, picked up the nod), and three technical noms: Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special; Outstanding Lighting Design/ Lighting Direction for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special; and Outstanding Picture Editing for a Special. In each of those categories, Gaga will take on the usual spate of awards telecasts (the 83rd Academy Awards, the 53rd Grammy Awards, etc.), not to mention comedians Ricky Gervais and Louis C.K., each of whom earned nods for their comedy specials.

Elsewhere, Gaga's favorite show, "Glee," was among the most-nominated programs, landing a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series. Stars Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer also earned nominations, as did guest stars Kristin Chenoweth, Dot-Marie Jones and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Will you be rooting for Gaga on Emmy night? Tell us in the comments!

Adam Lambert Taking Time Writing 'Honest' Follow-Up

'American Idol' runner-up predicts sophomore LP's first single will hit airwaves in late summer.

Glamberts rejoice! Adam Lambert is working on his next album, and he's ready to get personal. In an effort to avoid an unfortunate sophomore slump, the singer is taking his time making the follow-up to his debut, For Your Entertainment, completely sincere. Speaking with MTV News at the season-three premiere of "RuPaul's Drag Race" in Los Angeles, the "American Idol" runner-up dished a few details about the LP.

"I'm in talks, so it's all kind of being conceptualized right now, and what we're hoping for is maybe by the fall," Lambert said of the project's progression. "So, I'm going to take my time and really write the most personal songs, the most powerful songs. I really want it to be something that's really honest and real."

But before the LP drops, the "Idol" alum predicts the project's lead single will hit airwaves in late summer. The 28-year-old singer revealed that the album will be in tune with the rock/pop sound of his debut, but with a bit of a twist.

"I'm starting to talk to some writers and come up with some ideas, and I'll be writing a lot of it myself," he told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "It's going to be very pop, very rock, maybe even a little dark."

Fans got a taste of some new-ish material from the entertainer when Lambert dropped a five-song EP in December. "Acoustic Live!" included stripped-down versions of the singer's For Your Entertainment hits, including "Whataya Want From Me."

Are you excited for Adam Lambert's next album? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga Support Berry Family After Tragic Accident

Uncle of orphaned, injured Texas children calls outreach 'amazing.'

On July 3, the Berry family suffered an incredible tragedy. Parents Joshua and Robin Berry were killed in a car crash, while brothers Peter, 9, and Aaron, 8, were paralyzed, possibly for life, and remain hospitalized. Their younger sister, Willa, 6, was also injured, but suffered only broken bones. In the weeks since the crash in Texas, celebrities have been doing their part to help raise money for the care of the three young children.

Using the power of social media, everyone from Justin Bieber and Britney Spears to Lady Gaga and Usher have asked their fans to "Show Your Hearts" with donations at showyourhearts.org and via text message (texting BERRY to 85944 donates $10). Their call to arms has meant the world to Matt Berry, the kids' uncle.

"My wife had this family member in the Justin Bieber camp, and when the accident happened ... they reached out to us and asked how they could help," he told MTV News on Thursday. "So, it's been pretty much organic from their reaching out. Right after the accident, he was asking for their names and praying with his mom for the kids. It's not something we expected would happen, obviously.

"So, my understanding is that he wanted to do something to help, and the best way they could help was to create awareness," he continued. "They have a lot of friends and contacts. And then, of course, once their campaigns started going, it looked like a lot of people joined it because I think everyone had some sort of feeling of empathy."

The family is still mending: Peter and Aaron's "lifelong conditions" have been amplified by the loss of their parents; meanwhile Willa is still trying to come to terms with the incident.

Matt Berry said of all the public support they've received has "definitely helped." "Anything that goes to help the kids in their predicament [helps]. I don't know how long it will continue. I'm not someone who likes to be in the public eye, so it's a little bit awkward, but it's amazing.

"It's a little bit overwhelming," he added, but he said that right now, the family is taking it "day by day" as they deal with the aftermath of such a tremendously tragic turn of events.

"If it was up to us, we'd pray that they were able to stand up in a couple of weeks and walk out of the hospital, but the likelihood of that happening is low," he said, adding that the boys are readying for rehab to try to heal in any small way. "There's been a lot of people supporting us, and that's huge. The ultimate dream is if in their lifetime, there's enough momentum to figure something out and fix spinal-cord injuries. We've got two of them that need something special."

Show your support at showyourhearts.org and the Berry Children's Trust Facebook page.

If the marketing campaign for this weekend's "Crazy, Stupid, Love" has taught us anything, it's that Ryan Gosling possesses the kind of rippling abdominal region that seems possible only through extensive digital manipulation. Sting's Rainforest Foundation UK To Launch Celebrity Charity Christmas Auction

After the amazing success of last year’s event, the Rainforest Foundation UK will again be hosting an amazing online celebrity charity auction event called 12 Days of Christmas.

Auction lots, which will include an array of very desirable gift items available to online bidders wanting to score hot gift items for their friends and family while helping a good cause, have been generously donated by celebrities, luxury labels and big name brands who want to help raise money to protect the world’s rainforests.

Last year close to 150 fabulous guilt-free gifts were up for grabs, including plenty of ‘money can’t buy’ items like lunch at Sting & Trudie Styler's country estate, signed items from Dame Judi Dench, Ian McKellen and Kylie Minogue, limited edition clothing, accessories and luxury items from Vivienne Westwood, Giles Deacon, Jaeger, Jenny Packham, Bvlgari, Erdem and Aspinal of London, plus VIP gig tickets, music packs, haircuts, hampers and even a life size toy gorilla!

This year’s haul is expected to be even bigger, more fantastic and well in advance of the pre-Christmas sale madness. Lots to date include treatments at the Herbal and Wellbeing Sanctuary, meals for two at Roussillon (ranked 34th in Britain’s Top 100 Restaurants List) and the Michelin starred Auberge du Lac, places at Chelsea Football School and signed goodies from Tottenham Hotspur, golf sessions on two championship courses at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire and much, much more!

So, how does it work?

  • From the start of November, the Rainforest Foundation UK will have sneak previews of lots to be auctioned on their website, as well as Twitter (@RFUK) and Facebook.
  • On Tuesday 15th November 2011 the online auction will go live at www.ebay.co.uk/12days. The auction will run for 12 days with new items added throughout.
  • And to guarantee these joyous lots can make their way under the tree in time, all items will be shipped by 7th December 2011.

This auction will raise vital funds for the protection of the world's rainforests, and give generous bidders the warm glow of shopping to help charity and no doubt some serious love in response to their amazing present-giving come the big day!

The Rainforest Foundation UK was founded in 1989 by Sting and Trudie Styler, after they saw first-hand the impact the destruction of the Amazon rainforests had on the Kayapo Indians’ way of life. This sparked the Foundation’s first campaign which, in 1993, resulted in the protection of 27,359 km of indigenous peoples’ land. The Foundation has expanded and diversified since, and has worked in more than 20 countries to date towards the mission of “supporting indigenous peoples and traditional populations of the world’s rainforest to protect their rainforest homes and fulfill their rights to land, life and livelihood”.

Grammy 2011 Snubs Include Adam Lambert, Ke$ha, Big Boi, Rihanna

While Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber were both nominated, they didn't get as much love as some expected.
By Gil Kaufman

You hear it all the time: "I'm just thankful to be nominated." It's the gracious and polite thing to say, and artists who lose out on major awards always feel compelled to offer it up.

But what if you never even get nominated?

Every year, there are head-slapping omissions from the roster of nominees at the big awards-fests (Christopher Nolan at the Oscars, anyone?), and this year's 53rd annual Grammy Awards (which take place February 13) are no exception.

In the night's biggest category, Album of the Year, there was plenty of griping from critics about the inclusion of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream, which many considered too lightweight for the night's top prize. But there was also a bit of talk about Justin Bieber's smash My World 2.0 not making it into the mix in the major categories, even if Bieber can lick his wounds with his Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album love.

Though the rules about the Best New Artist category have since been changed to avoid such a problem in the future, Lady Gaga has been the victim of Grammy snubs before. She earned six nominations this year, including coveted Album of the Year for The Fame Monster, but it was mystifying that her huge hit, "Bad Romance," didn't get any Record or Song of the Year nominations.

What gives?

"They want her for ratings, but I think the Grammys are still a bit freaked out by Gaga," said Entertainment Weekly music writer Leah Greenblatt. "There were so many shenanigans about her not being nominated for Best New Artist that I think the Grammys got shamed over that. It's possible they would try to make it up to her by showering her with nominations and I could see her win in major categories [in the future], but I think they're not quite ready for her." That could, of course, change next year when Gaga's Born This Way is in the running.

Another diva used to serious Grammy love, Alicia Keys, was totally shut out for her The Element of Freedom album. "It's interesting that Alicia Keys got nothing," she said. "Her and John Mayer are practically on the ballots every year whether they qualify for eligibility or not. And I think 'Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart' was one of the year's best singles." And reclusive Grammy bait Sade got a pair of notices for her singles "Soldier of Love" and "Babyfather" in the R&B categories but no chance at any of the big prizes. Greenblatt said she was surprised by both snubs, especially since Sade's Soldier of Love album was one of the top sellers of 2010 and because the enigmatic singer had been away for nearly a decade and came back in fine, mature form, the kind of story the Grammys love to honor.

There were some eyebrows raised over the single nomination for "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert, who had a solid and creatively rich hit album with his debut, For Your Entertainment, but just a single nod for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Whataya Want From Me."

With Perry strutting into a number of top categories thanks to her light-as-air pop confections, it was a wonder that another pop tart with huge digital sales and big chart hits (things the Recording Academy likes to see), Ke$ha, was completely shut out of the game. Greenblatt thought the Lambert dis might fall into the same Gaga territory, with the Academy being a bit freaked out by the singer's out-and-proud persona and over-the-top antics, but when it comes to Ke$ha, she said it's probably a different story. "She had a huge impact, but I think the Grammys think she might go away, and they've chosen not to legitimize her," she speculated.

Speaking of big sales, quite a few people commented on the fact that Train's smash "Hey, Soul Sister," the best-selling single of 2010, got just one notice for a little-heard live version in the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group category.

A couple of well-respected hip-hop acts were also conspicuously absent from the nominations list, including Outkast's Big Boi, whose acclaimed Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty was left out of the Best Rap Album category, along with Rick Ross, whose Teflon Don got no love. "Rick Ross is the kind of artist made to be ignored by the Grammys," Greenblatt said. "He has a sensibility the Grammys will almost never come around to, no matter how beloved he is by rap fans."

But given that she thought Chico Dusty was one of the best albums of 2010, Greenblatt was stunned by the freeze-out of Big Boi, who has been showered with Grammy love in the past. "It's such an achievement, a fully realized album that feels like a real tapestry, a headphones album from someone whose skills are so singular ... [from] one of the most iconic and Grammy-approved hip-hop acts of all time."

Rihanna's Rated R was also eligible but got stiffed in the major categories, landing just a Best Dance Recording nod for "Only Girl (In the World)" for her single from last year's Loud and a number of notices for her work on Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie." And if you thought Kanye West got ripped off when My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy got blanked, don't worry: It wasn't eligible this year but is in the hunt for next year.

The one omission that seemed to make sense was the two small nominations for the kids from "Glee," who are up for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for their cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin' " and for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Glee: Vol. 1. Though they set cash registers ringing like crazy, it's no wonder that actors singing covers didn't garner attention at a show that ostensibly awards creativity. And no one seemed too shocked that Christina Aguilera's poorly received Bionic was ignored.

Who do you think got stiffed by the Grammys? Share your top snubs in the comments.

Jay-Z, Kanye Are 'Young Legends,' Otis Redding Daughter Says

'I just think the collaboration was certainly a tribute to him, and it's really great,' Karla Redding-Andrews tells MTV News of the Throne's 'Otis.'
By Rob Markman

Listening to the Throne's "Otis," it's clear that Jay-Z and Kanye West are fond of Otis Redding's classic soul sound.

Well, it turns out Otis' daughter Karla Redding-Andrews is a fan of both Hov and Yeezy. "Actually, those two artists are in my iPod," she told MTV News on Tuesday (July 26) before citing Jay's "Empire State of Mind" and 'Ye's 2005 album cut "Gone" as her two faves.

On "Otis," Kanye and Jay use a sampling of Redding's 1996 version of "Try a Little Tenderness". But before they could add the track to their upcoming Watch the Throne LP, they first had to get permission from Concord Music Group (which holds the song's masters), Otis' daughter and his wife, Zelma Redding.

"When it was brought to us, it was quite interesting. We wanted to, first of all, see the lyrics and, secondly, hear the song," Redding-Andrews said. "We couldn't find anything negative as it relates to the association with Otis Redding. My mother has protected that legacy for so many years; therefore she gave them the approval to do it."

For the Redding family — who also run the Big "O" Youth Educational Dream Foundation, which teaches music to 30 youngsters yearly — it was significant that the Throne's sample would help to keep Otis' legacy alive.

"It really means a lot to me, particularly to a whole new generation of young legends, because that's what Jay-Z and Kanye are," Redding-Andrews said. "I just think it's wonderful to tie an old legendary artist whose music history will never die to something [that] they have come up with. I just think the collaboration was certainly a tribute to him, and it's really great."

In September, the foundation will celebrate Otis' 70th birthday anniversary with an entire weekend of festivities, including a concert in Macon, Georgia, that they have dubbed "An Evening of RESPECT."

Ultimately, "Otis" is exposing a new generation to Redding's music in a very hip and cool way. "With what we do with our foundation — pairing music with education, always involved with young people — how can I not be a fan of Kanye West and Jay-Z?" Redding-Andrews said.

Are you a fan of Jay and Kanye's "Otis"? Tell us in the comments!

Stars Show Their Hearts To Help Accident Survivors

Written by Tim Saunders

Justin Bieber and Britney Spears are among the stars showing their hearts for a new charity campaign to help a family involved in a tragic accident in Houston earlier this month.

The Berry family were returning from a family road trip to Colorado on July 3 when their vehicle was struck head on by another car. Parents Joshua and Robin Berry were killed, while two of their three children have been left paralyzed from the waist down.

The Show Your Hearts campaign has been created to raise urgent funds to aid Peter (age 9), Aaron (8) and Willa (6), and to help in their rehabilitation, physical therapy, psychological support and education.

A number of stars – including Lady Gaga, Diddy, New Kids On The Block and Nicole Scherzinger – have already shown their support for the family through Twitter by using the hashtag #showyourhearts, and asking fans to change their profile pictures to the Show Your Hearts symbol (as shown by Britney above).

Celebrities Remember Disney For Charity

The Great Ormond Street Hospital in London is asking people to share their first Disney memory – and when they reach a million memories, Disney will donate 1 million to the charity.

A number of celebrities – including Michael Caine, Melanie C, Thandie Newton and Julie Walters – have already added their first Disney memories to the campaign.

Whether it’s singing along to Mowgli and Baloo’s Bare Necessities at the cinema, to hiding behind the sofa from Snow White’s evil Queen Maleficent to meeting Mickey Mouse at Disneyland in Florida, you’re sure to have a first Disney memory. And by simply sharing yours on Facebook and helping spread the word about the campaign you can be instrumental in raising 1 million for an incredible cause.

“My memories were Snow White and Bambi,” says Sir Michael Caine. “I remember crying my eyes out when Bambi’s mother died in the forest and laughing my head off at the Seven Dwarfs.”

Million Disney Memories supports The Walt Disney Company’s ongoing commitment to raise 10 million for the charity. The funds raised by the Disney Appeal will help build the new medical centre at the hospital, and create an interactive play area. Rihanna Tops Lady Gaga In Facebook Fans

Rihanna has around 40,000 more admirers than Gaga on the social-networking site.
By Gil Kaufman

We talk a lot around here about all the records Lady Gaga is breaking, but as of Friday (July 15), there was one title that even Gaga's ferocious Little Monsters couldn't help her win: Queen of Facebook.

Though Mother Monster has an impressive 40,575,791 Facebook fans at press time, she was just pushed down to #2 in the bid to be the most popular woman on Facebook by Rihanna, who slipped into the lead with 40,616,457 fans, or around 40,000 more Facebook admirers than Gaga.

The passing of the torch was noted by Facebook's marketing director Randi Zuckerberg, who tweeted on Thursday, "Sorry, Gaga! As of today, Rihanna has passed Lady Gaga as the #1 most popular woman on Facebook."

Of course Gaga still rules the roost on Twitter (with 11.6 million followers, she bests Rihanna, who is down at #13 in Twitter followers), where she was the first person to surpass the 10 million mark. And that's just one of the many records she's smashed on her way to the top.

She can also breathe easier now that her personal YouTube channel has been restored after going offline earlier this week thanks to a copyright-violation issues.

A YouTube spokesperson told MTV News that the takedown order was given after Gaga had accumulated an unspecified amount of copyright claims, which results in an automatic suspension of an account. The clip that appeared to trigger the suspension involved unauthorized posting of a recent performance from Japan involving the popular boy band SMAP, who appeared in a medley of Gaga tunes on a TV broadcast.

Do you "like" Rihanna or Gaga on Facebook? Let us know in the comments!

'Battleship' Trailer: The Five Key Scenes

We see a whole lot of Brooklyn Decker's skin and an alien ship, but blink and you'll miss Rihanna.
By Eric Ditzian

Photo: Universal Pictures

"Battleship" may be based on a board game, but the action flick's first trailer shows an influence far more cinematic than anything having to do with little plastic pegs and the faux-sinking of tiny seafaring vessels. The new footage, which Yahoo! premiered on Wednesday (July 27), begins like an ode to a "Blue Crush"-ish beach make-out movie, veers into "Armageddon"-esque father-vs.-daughter's-boyfriend antagonism, then explodes in an orgy of a couple dozen alien-invasion movie references.

Totally original, this one ain't. But it's also pretty damn entertaining, and we really are looking forward to checking out the madness when it hits theaters on May 18, 2012. Until then, here are our picks for the five key "Battleship" trailer moments.

Brooklyn, Obviously
One of these days, Brooklyn Decker is going to get a movie role that doesn't require her to parade around a beach in a bikini. Or not. One thing is certain after checking out this footage and taking in her performance, such as it was, in Adam Sandler's "Just Go With It": Decker, the Sports Illustrated model, has been typecast. In "Battleship," she finds herself in the middle of one of cinema's oldest relationship pickles: in love with a bad boy whom her dad can't freaking stand. Clearly the relationship between the boy (a naval officer played by Taylor Kitsch) and the daddy (Liam Neeson's no-nonsense admiral) will factor into the battle with these aliens. Let's just hope it doesn't become the emotional focus.

Don't Tread on Me
Everything in the Navy's military exercises in the big blue ocean seems to be going well until they encounter a hulking contraption submerged in the water. One unlucky dude (Kitsch) is sent out to touch base, literally, with the alien ship, unleashing a whole lot of extraterrestrial terror. The aliens, we'll soon learn, are here to utilize our oceans as a power source. This one shot raises a bunch of questions. Why are the ship's defenses activated by simple touch, rather than the proximity of the Navy? What kind of tech do the aliens possess that they can send a sort of shockwave that hurtles a man so far, so quickly? And what's inside the ship that we don't yet see?

What a Big Bubble You Have!
Speaking of alien weaponry, the ship is capable of unleashing some kind of bubble force field that encompasses an enemy and, so it seems, destroys everything within it. We'll just ignore, for now, how the bubble reminds us of that containment unit in "The Simpsons Movie." Instead, let's concentrate on the alien tech. We're hoping for originality and cool visuals to join forces and deliver us a satisfying early summer movie experience. The bubble, perhaps, is the harbinger of fun, absurd, eye-popping stuff to come.

She Needs an Umbrella
"Battleship" marks Rihanna's big-screen debut. In the trailer, blink and you miss her. But she's there, standing up in a raft and looking wet as the alien craft flies overhead. She certainly looks freaked out. But we can't yet get a sense of her acting chops from this footage; and hey, we might not be able to even after this popcorn flick's credits roll. All we can say for now is she had a blast on the production. "Working with [director] Peter Berg is unbelievable," she told us last fall. "I love doing movies now. It's something I want to do more of. I just want to pick films that are wise for me and roles that I can pull off, nothing that is too big for me."

Taking Flight
We have to say we're surprised how much of the alien ship we get to see in this first trailer. We see how it's a craft that can both plunge into the water and also take flight. We see how it can transform and shift and hover; quite a lot of control, those aliens have on this sucker. We see its cylinder-shaped weaponry. We see the front of the ship almost seems to have a face. So the question is: How much did filmmakers hold back? We haven't, for instance, seen the aliens themselves. With so many alien flicks hitting theaters each year, it's getting harder and harder to surprise audiences with those creatures. Can "Battleship" do it? Stay tuned.

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

Lady Gaga And Bette Midler: A Real Mermaid Weighs In!

MTV News goes straight to the source to discuss recent pop-culture mermaid trends and beefs.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé declared her love for mermaids during her MTV special "The Year of 4," while Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler have all dressed up like the mythical sea creatures onstage or in videos. Madonna has surrounded herself with mermen during a past tour, and mermaids also show up in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and in several new novels, including a forthcoming book by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida is famous for its mermaid shows, so MTV News decided to go right to the source and get a real-deal mermaid on the phone. It's no surprise that "mermaid" Carli Goodworth told us it's officially the Year of the Mermaid.

"It used to be really popular, like, 60 years ago and everybody was all about mermaids, and now today, it's coming back again," Goodworth told MTV News. "The stars are starting to use it, and the people from outside are loving it, and hopefully it'll draw more people to our attraction as well."

So why are pop stars taking on mermaid alter egos? Goodworth said the public persona of mermaids has shifted from the cute and cuddly Disney version to the more accurate version of mermaids who are mysterious, dangerous and sexy.

And the mermaid trend hasn't been free from controversy: There has already been beef between fans of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, accusing the pop stars of lifting the idea, and then between Lady Gaga and Bette Midler, who did the mermaid-in-a-wheelchair routine decades before Gaga did.

"It's becoming so popular," Goodworth laughed about the mermaid beefs. "I think it's awesome. We're used to the few people around here, because we are known as the mermaid country, and it's neat to see all these other people battling it out to be the only mermaid. It's just different."

Being that Goodworth has performed as a mermaid for quite some time now, she's happy to see other people getting excited about it. "We love mermaids, so it's fun to see other people doing stuff with mermaids besides us," she said, adding her advice: "Be creative, do your own thing, really do your research."

What do you think about the pop-culture mermaid trend? Let us know in the comments!

VMA Nominee Leader Katy Perry, By The Numbers

It's not just those nine VMA nods — it's been a record-setting year for Katy.
By Gil Kaufman

There's no other way to say it: Katy Perry is having a moment. Actually, she's having 525,600 moments, as in 365 days of record-smashing, parent-upsetting, whipped cream-spurting, alien-loving, Indian wedding-having minutes of awesomeness.

And what better way to top it off than with a field-leading nine MTV Video Music Award nominations? Perry leads this year's field, as well she should, given that her clips for such hits as "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," "Teenage Dream," "Firework" and "E.T." have become modern classics and racked up millions of online views.

But the year has been about a whole lot more than gummy video goodness, so we decided to take a look back and crunch some numbers on the Year in Katy:

Explore our "Katy Perry: By The Numbers" infographic:

4 million: Number of digital copies Perry's "E.T." has sold so far. In fact, it joins her hits "California Gurls," "Firework," "Hot N Cold" and "I Kissed a Girl" in reaching that mark.

48: That's the record Perry shattered for the most consecutive weeks with a single inside the top 10, beating out Swedish popsters Ace of Base.

2: Number of beefs Perry got into with Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. Though it was quickly squashed, for a minute it seemed as if the former Christian singer had dissed Gaga's "Alejandro" video for its use of religious imagery.

Months later, Perry denied taking a swipe at Spears over product placement in Britney's "Hold it Against Me" video.

4: Perry came this close to making history this summer when it looked like "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" would become the fifth single from Teenage Dream to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. If she had hit the top (she stalled, ironically at #4), she would have become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off the same album and the first artist of either gender to do it since Michael Jackson (in the period between 1987 and 1988).

2: Number of times Perry has appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine since Teenage Dream came out.

17: Shots of Perry's nearly naked rear end in the "California Gurls" video. (Not like we sat there and counted or anything.)

Billions: Amount of Gummi Bears that Perry offended when she cast some nude, crude and middle-finger-flipping rude candy bears in the "Gurls" video.

9: record-setting number of weeks Eminem's Recovery would have spent at #1 had Teenage Dream not rained on its parade.

0: Total number of celebrities besides Perry who have had their "Sesame Street" bits shelved because they showed too much cleavage.

2: Number of elephants (Laxmi and Mala) involved in Perry and Russell Brand's wedding in India in October. Also involved in the wedding? Jugglers, acrobats, a drum troupe and traditional Indian Rajasthani folk singers and dancers.

0: Number of famous couples besides Perry and Brand who have flirted and gone on a date and then gotten married after being introduced at the VMAs.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Lady Gaga Teases Mermaid-Themed Music Video

Gaga says that her mermaid alter-ego, Yuyi, 'is in incubation' and may be born in her next clip.

Lady Gaga is still doing her part to make mermaids the next big thing in mythological creature trends. Though she went with a lo-fi, '80s-esque video for "The Edge of Glory" instead of her rumored "fishy" theme, there's a chance she could go under the sea for a different clip.

"I haven't been excited about a video like this in a really long time," she said on a Taiwanese talk show recently, refusing to name the title of the fourth single off of Born This Way.

"The relation of the video to my real life, as well as to my dream of the future, is really what makes it so special," she said on the show. "Part of what Born This Way is all about is choosing to live halfway between reality and fantasy at all times, and how anyone can do that. So this video really, really challenges that idea and also celebrates it. And it's very exciting.

"I will also say that Yuyi is in incubation, for anyone who knows what that means," she added, referring to the name she's given to her mermaid alter ego that she first unveiled during her performance for France's "Le Grand Journal" in June. "Yuyi may just be born in the next video."

Gaga teased that her next single would surprise fans during a Twitter Q&A last week, leading to many a guessing game and wish list.

"I don't want to ruin the surprise! It's very unexpected. Working on the video now," she said. "Next single coming in a bit."

A rep for Gaga has not responded to MTV News' request for comment regarding the next single.

Audrina Patridge, Ke$ha, Adam Lambert Share Prom Memories

'Me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m.,' Ke$ha tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's prom season, and that means high schoolers across this great land will be renting tuxes, buying fancy dresses and negotiating the details of their curfews with parents. So, before you take your pictures and get in your limos, we asked some Hollywood A-listers to recall their fondest prom memories.

"I had a great prom," Ne-Yo told MTV News. "I didn't get to go with who I wanted to go with. I got my second choice, but my second choice turned out to be the one I was supposed to be there with, so it turned out good."

Ke$ha, never one to say no to a party, had the best night of all her friends. "I went to prom with my gay best friend, and let me tell you, I had way more fun than anybody else at a prom with their boyfriends," she recalled. "Everybody else was, like, crying and drama and breaking up, and me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m."

"Hellcats" star Aly Michalka doesn't have a favorite prom memory — because she never went to prom. "I was homeschooled, so I don't even think we had a fake prom," she lamented. "Like, maybe we had a home-school prom and I wasn't invited?"

While everything always seems to be in peril on "The Vampire Diaries," star Nina Dobrev had a less tumultuous night: "Having everyone get together and such a final celebration [is what I remember]."

Romeo went big for his prom. "My senior prom, I remember I pulled up in my red Ferrari. I was feeling like James Bond," he said. "And it was one of the best nights of my life."

"My favorite prom memory was probably going shopping for a dress, and our boyfriends at the time dressed up as 'Dumb & Dumber,' " Audrina Patridge laughed. "And so we were like, 'We can't dress up dorky ... we have to look good.' "

Roots drummer ?uestlove made a big decision on the night of his prom: "June 2, 1989, was my very last haircut; prom haircut, totally butchered my hair. He butchered my hair, and I vowed never again to ever get in a barber chair, so I grew that Afro on my prom night."

Adam Lambert said his prom date was a 10, so he definitely had a fun night. "I had a great prom. I had an awesome time," he said. "I went with one of my best friends in high school. Her name was Lauren, and she was really hot. She wore a really hot red dress, so I felt like I had arm candy."

Chris Brown BET Award Snafu Was 'Human Error'

BET exec Stephen Hill takes full responsibility for Drake and Rihanna mistakenly being announced as Viewers' Choice.
By Rob Markman

Sunday night's 2011 BET Awards Show was filled with amazing live performances, heartfelt acceptance speeches and that one strange moment when a trophy was mistakenly handed out to the wrong artist.

When "106 & Park" hosts Terrance and Rocsi brought contest winner Tiffany Green onstage to announce the Viewers' Choice Award, Green, like all the other presenters of the night, read the winner from a tablet PC, instead of doing the traditional envelope-opening. At first, she called out Chris Brown as the victor, but then she backtracked and gave the trophy to Drake for his collaboration with Rihanna, "What's My Name?"

"Well, this awkward," said Drake to start his acceptance speech, after his and Rihanna's name appeared on the video screen. But then it turned out that the intended recipient was Chris Brown after all, and as the show neared its end, BET cleared up the confusion and brought Breezy out to accept the award.

An embarrassed Green took to Twitter and said, "Bawling backstage. They totally f---ed me up."

In a classy move, BET President of Music Programming and Specials Stephen Hill took full responsibility for the snafu. "That BET Awards Viewer's Choice mix-up was due to human error," he said in a tweet. "And I was the human that made that error. I apologize to ALL affected."

It was just a single blemish on an otherwise event-filled show, which featured performances from Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Mary J. Bilge, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé, who performed remotely from the Glastonbury festival in England.

Katie Holmes' West Hollywood Workday

Tending to her always-busy work schedule, Katie Holmes was spotted leaving a meeting at a West Hollywood, California office this afternoon (July 27).

The 32-year-old mother of one dressed in her usual classic garb, sporting a pair of over-sized sunglasses, white collared shirt and bell-bottom blue jeans.

According to tabloid reports, Katie is on a "near hunger strike" and looks "painfully thin," all because of her husband, Tom Cruise.

As a Life & Style source has claimed, Cruise treats Holmes ?like his Eliza Doolittle," forcing her to take control of the only aspect of her life that she can - her weight.

Despite the mag's insiders, a rep for the "Dawson's Creek" actress says the story is "ridiculous."

Cat Deeley Launches Marks And Spencer UNICEF Campaign

UNICEF UK Ambassador Cat Deeley is calling on Marks & Spencer customers to support UNICEF by not taking hangers home when they buy clothes.

The TV presenter is supporting the new partnership, launched on 21 July, which will see M&S donate 50p for every 1 saved from hanger recycling to UNICEF.

The partnership aims to raise at least 1.9 million over three years to fund essentials like clean water, education and health care for children in two locations in the Mymensingh and Dhaka regions of Bangladesh.
??
“There are countries where children live in fear and without access to things like running water, education or healthcare,” said Deeley. “We need to help these children. By joining with UNICEF, M&S customers will be able to make a real difference to children’s lives ? just by recycling hangers.”
?
Marc Bolland, Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer said: “Just one box of hangers can provide a child with clean water for a fortnight. We believe our UNICEF partnership can make a big difference to families and communities in Bangladesh.”

The M&S and UNICEF partnership launched in M&S stores on 21 July.
