J. Cole Debut Will Take Musicality 'To The Next Level'

'The amount of concepts that are on the album is pretty remarkable,' MC tells MTV News of Cole World.

As far as rap debuts go, J. Cole's Cole World: The Sideline Story is among the year's most anticipated, especially since it's being released on Jay-Z's Roc Nation label. Not that the pressure has gotten to him.

While J. Cole is surely aware of the inevitable pressures that come with dropping an album under the guidance of someone of Jay-Z's stature, the North Carolina rapper assured MTV News that there were no grand executive decisions made during the recording of his LP.

"All the songs on the album just happened naturally. There was never a 'Oh, we need this kind of song,' " Cole told us backstage during last week's New Jersey stop on Rihanna's Loud Tour. "Everything happened naturally and very organically."

Not only is the LP organic, but the Fayetteville MC says it's surprisingly musical.

"It wasn't until I started playing it for people and I kept getting those responses like, 'Man, this is really musical,' " he said. "To me, that's regular; that's what you should do on an album. I try to do that as much as possible, even on my mixtapes. So on the album, of course, I took it to the next level."

Without giving too much away, the rapper/producer promises a conceptual ride for Cole World. "Concepts-wise, the amount of concepts that are on the album is pretty remarkable, and that balanced with the fun songs," he revealed. "It's not a depressing [album], even though it could've went that way. I have enough songs where I could've just made it straight tearjerker."

The LP is slated for a September 27 release, but the rapper has been careful about doling out the details. He has a Jay-Z collaboration in the works, and even though he's still waiting for Hov to lay his verse, Cole is confident.

"I made it in my crib and I was like, 'Man, I'm gonna throw something out today, or tomorrow whatever, let me do a song.' Then I started making it, and as soon as I made it, I was like, 'Oh nah, na,' " he said of how he came up with the song's instrumental. "I had already wrote the verses and I realized, 'Man, this is for Jay.' I finally made a song that was perfect for Jay."

Are you looking forward to Cole's debut album? Let us know in the comments section!

Jay-Z And Kanye West Set To Break Coldplay iTunes Record

Watch the Throne surpasses Viva la Vida as digital first-week sales king.

There should be some interesting conversation this week between Jay-Z and his buddy Chris Martin. Billboard is reporting that when the sales numbers for Watch the Throne are released Wednesday, Hov and Kanye West will break Coldplay's U.S. one-week sales record on iTunes.

Billboard learned through its sources that the album — which was exclusively available through iTunes from its release on August 8 to August 11 — sold approximately 290,000 units through Sunday. That's 8,000 more digital copies than Coldplay slung when they dropped their 2008 album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.

On Friday, Throne was released to physical retailers, and when the first-week digital and physical sales are tallied together, it is a safe bet Jigga and Yeezy will land the #1 spot on the Billboard albums chart.

See what fans thought of the Watch the Throne pop-up store, which appeared in NYC last week.

When MTV News interviewed a panel of hip-hop experts last week, estimations of Jay and Kanye's sales varied. Vibe editorial director Datwon Thomas guessed the Throne would sell 500,000, while Hot 97 DJ Kast One thought the album would push up to 400,000 copies.

Predicting the final first-week sales number for Watch the Throne isn't easy, though. While most albums traditionally drop on a Tuesday, WTT was released on a Monday, and its four-day iTunes exclusivity further complicated matters. By the time the physical CD was released on Friday, it was difficult to judge how buyers would react. While the album was originally predicted to sell just north of 500,000 copies, now that number is looking like it will fall anywhere between 410,000 and 450,000.

What do you think Watch the Throne will sell in its first week? Tell us in the comments!

Kanye West, Robyn, More: The Other Videos Of The Year

Before the VMAs air live August 28 at 9 p.m. ET on MTV, we shine a spotlight on some lesser-known clips.
By James Montgomery

Last week, the nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards were revealed in a live special that featured plenty of surprise guests (like multiple-nominees Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Tyler, the Creator) and just as many actual surprises.

Perhaps nowhere was the latter more apparent than in the Video of the Year category, which saw Perry's "Firework" and Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" grab noms (as predicted), but also featured a trio of rather unexpected inclusions: Mars' "Grenade," the Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise" and Tyler's "Yonkers."

In fact, though they're all worthy selections, this year's Video of the Year category might best be remembered for the clips that didn't make the cut. And we're not just talking about high-profile vids like Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie," Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" or Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" either. There were plenty of videos that wowed us in 2011, from artists both big and small. And after some rather zesty debate in the MTV Newsroom, we've compiled some of our favorites. Have a look at our picks for the Other Videos of the Year.

Arcade Fire, "The Suburbs"
A stirring, somber clip that's part political treatise (the perils of colonialism, the erosion of civil liberties, etc.), part social commentary (the steady advance of adulthood, the preponderance of the past) and all compelling. It's part of a larger film from director Spike Jonze and the band. Proof that sometimes the best artists actually do make the best art.

Battles, "Ice Cream"
A collection of seemingly random images — Karate! Some dude drinking milk! Bowling! A girl licking a doorknob! — tossed in a blender and whirled into a seizure-inducing syrup. The end result is a blissed-out, kinetic trip, and while it doesn't make an ounce of sense, when paired with Battles' spastic strut, it almost does. Almost being the operative word, of course.

James Blake, "Limit to Your Love"
A clip that's as sumptuously simple as the track it backs, "Limit to Your Love" is little more than scenes of urban malaise — a darkly lit apartment, a decadently unmade bed, a decaying wooden floor — but its true power lies in the wonder it creates within those confines. Appliances limp to life, fruit hovers in the air, and a churning sea appears out of thin air. Like Blake's music, there's magic in the minimalism.

Kanye West, "Monster"
The disclaimer at the beginning states that "Monster" is "an art piece and it shall be taken as such," but as is the case with pretty much everything Kanye does, it's not that simple. Because while some decried the clip for its (frankly pretty brutal) misogynistic leanings — and with the abundance of half-nude women, fully deceased women, who can blame them? — few could deny that "Monster" is also a jarring, compelling, decidedly dark masterstroke. Deeply troubling torture porn or totally realized work of art? Probably both.

Manchester Orchestra, "Simple Math"
The year's most brilliant, beautiful (and quite possibly best) video, "Simple Math" twists time and space — the whole thing plays out over the time it takes frontman Andy Hull's truck to spin violently off the road — into a Möbius strip of memories, and the result is powerful enough to send shivers down your spine. Sure, it's about the fleeting nature of life, but really, it dares to ask an even bigger question: What do you see when you die? Your regrets? Your triumphs? Your loves? How about all the above?

My Chemical Romance, "Na Na Na"
A breakneck, candy-colored, full-throttle thrill ride through pop culture's past, set in the postapocalyptic future. Only My Chemical Romance could make a video this deliriously over-the-top, not to mention this dedicated to being flat-out ridiculous. It's a talent, really.

Portugal. The Man, "Sleep Forever"
A 13-minute mini-movie shot in and around frontman John Gorley's native Alaska, it gradually dissolves into a metaphoric tale of survival — one man wandering the wilderness — with an appropriately gruesome conclusion. Part fever dream, part epic, wide-screen experience, it may not end on a particularly positive note, but really, neither does life.

Radiohead, "Lotus Flower"
The video that spawned a million memes, "Lotus Flower" isn't flashy like Radiohead's older clips; it's just Thom Yorke, in a bowler hat and button-up, spazzing out to the song. And yet, it's infinitely watchable, both as a curio case and a compelling little bit of art. Also because, man, it's fun to try and replicate Thom's moves. And then go to the chiropractor.

Robyn, "Call Your Girlfriend"
Part of Robyn's endearing charm lies in the fact that she's never afraid to go it alone. And in "Call Your Girlfriend," she does just that. It's just her, dancing in a warehouse, while lights dazzle and the song soars. Of course, the video is oddly sad too (mostly because she's all by her lonesome, singing for a love she cannot have), which goes to yet another part of that aforementioned charm: Even her most sugary bonbons come with a bittersweet filling.

What are your picks for Other Videos of the Year? Let us know in the comments!

The 2011 Video Music Awards air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Watch The Throne Track-By-Track Breakdown

Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam breaks down the tracks on Watch the Throne with MTV News
By Rob Markman

Kanye West and Jay-Z
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

Since Kanye West first announced Watch the Throne on Twitter in August 2010, the tag-team LP with Jay-Z had been shrouded in mystery. In the months leading up to the album's August 8, 2011 release, details remained sketchy. There was no loaded press run, super radio push, music video or album leaks leading up to the drop. In fact, "H.A.M" and "Otis" were the only songs released to the general public; beyond that there was nothing.

A few were in the know, like Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam who, was there throughout the recording process and helped Hov and Yeezy achieve their sonic goal. "As an A&R it's a process of trying to bring out the artist's creative ideas and their visions," Thiam told MTV News of his general job function in an exclusive interview.

However, when dealing with such accomplished artists like Kanye and Jay, who both have classic works under their belts, Thiam's role wasn't that of a traditional A&R rep. "When it comes to big artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rihanna, a label can't just assign you to a project like that," he said. "You can't just be like, 'Yo Kanye we're gonna have such and such be your A&R.' He's gonna be like, 'Who the f--- is that? Hell no.' So they have to really rock with you off [general principle] and that's how the whole process goes."

And rock they did. From start to finish, Bu Thiam was there, lending his professional opinions, helping to build tracks and carry them from concept to a fully mixed and mastered product.

There aren't too many people who can break down Watch the Throne Breakdown track-by-track, but then again there aren't many people in the game like Bu Thiam.

Watch the Throne Breakdown

"No Church in the Wild" featuring Frank Ocean (Produced by 88 Keys, Kanye West and Mike Dean)

"Collectively [working with Frank Ocean] was both of their ideas. It was like, 'Yo this guy is incredible.' They were a fan of him prior and it was like, 'Yo we should fly him to New York to come out here.' [Frank] went in and he just went to work. That kid is incredible, man. That particular record was one take. It just was like, [sings] 'What's a king to a God.' We were actually in the room like, 'Yo he f---ing nailed it.' "

"Lift Off" featuring Beyoncé (Produced by Kanye West, Jeff Bhasker and Mike Dean)

" 'Lift Off' was definitely one of the earlier records [recorded for the album]. [Putting the sound effects on the record] is a process because initially a record might just be a beat, a chorus and a hook and as [Kanye] hears things he adds and takes things out."

"N---as in Paris" (Produced by Hit-Boy, Kanye West and Mike Dean)

"Them guys, everything they rap about is what they actually go through. So when you hear that album it's real. When Jay says, 'I ball so hard motherf---ers wanna fine me,' they gave him a fine because he took a picture with the college players at the NCAA tournament. So he got a fine for that in real life. So when you hear it you think he's braggin', but no, it's really true."

"Otis" featuring Otis Redding (Produced by Kanye West)

"[Kanye] was late for his flight, we were in the studio working all day and he was late for his flight. As we were leaving he was like, 'Yo hold on for a second.' So he drops his bags and goes to the MPC [beat machine] and his assistant is rushing him and he's just f----ing with [the beat]. What's so crazy is the whole time he's doing that Jay is writing his verses in his head. But Jay is watching the [NBA] playoffs, I think it was the championship; Miami and Dallas. So Jay is watching the playoffs. I'm not even thinking Jay is paying attention to what 'Ye is doing and by the time he is finished it's like 'I invented swag ...' And I'm like, 'What the f--- just happened?' "

"Gotta Have It" (Produced by The Neptunes and Kanye West)

"It's like a beat battle. 'Ye might play something and then Pharrell might play something. They go back and forth man and then they come to a point where they come with one beat."

"New Day" (Produced by Kanye West, RZA and Mike Dean)

"The energy from that was just a situation when 'Ye and Jay were talking about — because both of the guys don't have kids yet. So, it was just a conversation that they were talking about just having kids and how they're gonna raise their kids because of the success that they're having now."

"That's My Bitch" (Produced by Kanye West, Q-Tip and Jeff Bhasker)

"The way Jay writes records you have to really go back and listen to 'em. The way he said 'bitch' and 'dog' and then 'get ya own' like how he used the Big Pun [flow]. So you have to really go back and listen to it three or four times to be able to say anything about a Jay-Z record. Really he's bigging up his wife through the whole verse, but if you're small minded, you won't catch that."

"Welcome to the Jungle" featuring Swizz Beatz (Produced by Swizz Beatz)

"We were at the Mercer [Hotel in New York] and Pharrell came by, Swizz came by, Rihanna came by it was like a room full of superstars. Swizz came through with [shoe designer] Christian Louboutin — the guy! It was really that guy."

"Who Gon Stop Me" (Produced by Sak Pase of the Jugganauts and Kanye West)

"Verse Simmonds actually did the chorus for 'Who Gon Stop Me.' Initially if you hear the second half of that [finished] beat." The [entire] song was [originally just] the second half. The dub step factor came later on in the process. I gotta give [Kanye] all credit for that, when he came back from Paris he was like, 'Yo I added this piece to the beat.' "

"Murder to Excellence" (Produced by Swizz Beatz and S1)

"As much as people may think that Jay talks about money and cars, he's really not that guy. Of course he has it, but his whole mission is to build. He wants to have others join him, he's trying to build black excellence, like the black youth as the next [generation of] executives."

"Made in America" featuring Frank Ocean (Produced by Sak Pase of the Jugganauts)

"That's what Frank is about if you listen to his music you can tell that he's a very smart guy. We were in the studio, Jay wasn't there, 'Ye wasn't there, it was just me and Noah — one of the engineers. [Frank Ocean] was just thinking of different concepts, he was there for like eight hours, then probably like six in the morning he was like 'Sweet baby Jesus.' "

"Why I Love You" featuring Mr Hudson (Produced by Mike Dean and Kanye West)

"There is only so much you can do for a person. Like Jay said [in the song], 'I tried to teach n---as to be kings and all they wanted to be was soldiers.' Like that's a real line, that's how he felt. [Kanye and Jay] do get a lot of criticism in their careers and how they move and I think they just wanted to express it."

Rihanna's 'Man Down' Producers Tease Her Next Album

'We did two records for her that she really, really loved,' the Jugganauts producer Verse Simmonds tells Mixtape Daily.

Behind the Beats: Verse Simmonds

After finding success crafting the music for Rihanna's "Man Down," the production duo known as the Jugganauts — Sham "Sak Pase" Joseph and Verse Simmonds — are looking to recapture the magic on the Bajan beauty's upcoming sixth album.

"From what I understand, she is closing the album up now, and we did two records for her that she really, really loved and I'm really excited about them as well," Simmonds told Mixtape Daily. "They are records that we wrote and produced as the Jugganauts."

Simmonds is hoping that he and partner Sak Pase land another track on Rihanna's album. And while he couldn't confirm the Jugganauts' contributions will make the final cut, he said was "99.999 percent" certain for now. For those wondering whether the singer's new tunes will sound anything like the reggae-infused "Man Down," Simmonds says no.

"Nah, definitely not, because we always try to constantly — as producers, as artists — we try to always come with something different, a whole new sound," he said without elaborating on what that new record would sound like.

As far as his chemistry with Sak Pase, with whom he did production work on Jay-Z and Kanye West's upcoming Watch the Throne album, the two seem to have a pretty organic working relationship. "In the studio, it can go one of two ways: Most times I'm writing and he's creating the track, and we produce a lot of records like that," Verse said. "Sometimes it'll flip; he'll be writing and I'll be producing the track so it depends on the vibe, and who comes in there first, who's got an idea or concept."

Taylor Lautner Chooses Bruno Mars, And More Celeb VMA Picks

Kim Kardashian predicts Katy Perry will win Video of the Year at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
By Kara Warner

Bruno Mars

All of the categories for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards are competitive, but none more so than the eclectic group vying for Sunday night's biggest prize: Video of the Year.

The 2011 nominees for Video of the Year are: Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise," Bruno Mars' "Grenade," Katy Perry's "Firework" and Tyler the Creator's "Yonkers." MTV News recently asked some celebrities for their predictions on who will take home the night's most-important Moonman.

"I'm a huge Bruno Mars fan, so maybe I'd give the slight edge there," "Twilight" star Taylor Lautner said diplomatically.

"I'm going to go with Bruno Mars," said Christopher Mintz-Plasse. "That song is really insanely catchy."

And "Harry Potter" star Tom Felton also revealed, "I'm a bit of a Bruno fan."

"I like Katy Perry," Kim Kardashian told us, as her sister Kourtney nodded in agreement.

"Switched at Birth" star Sean Berdy cast his vote via sign language and the help of a translator: "It goes to Katy Perry for 'Firework.' I love her music."

Admitted longtime fan Affion Crockett said, "I gotta be loyal: I'm going to stick with the Beastie Boys." And OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder told us, "I would vote for Beastie Boys."

Allstar Weekend put their vote in for Tyler the Creator's trippy "Yonkers" clip, as did another all-boy band, Honor Society. "We're going for Tyler," Society frontman Michael Bruno revealed.

"Cockroaches, vomiting, the whole thing, it's all there."

"I gotta go with Adele," said "Voice" winner Javier Colon, and "Teen Wolf" star Crystal Reed gushed, "I love Adele. I secretly wish I was her."

So, based on our informal celeb poll (we counted band members as one), Bruno Mars would take home the Video of the Year trophy, having earned three votes. All the other nominees received two.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

There were many, many standout moments that VMA viewers witnessed from the comfort of their living rooms (Beyonc#233;'s belly! Gaga/Jo macking on Britney!). But for every big moment on air, there was plenty of other crazy stuff that went down backstage, where there were no cameras rolling. But your trusty MTV News correspondents had access all over the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, and here's what we gathered from behind the scenes of the main show.

» Jo Calderone on the move! We witnessed Gaga in character, dressed in a navy suit, black hair slicked back, cigarette behind her ear, serious look on her face as she headed up to the stage!

» After Gaga's performance, her dancers left the stage, and seemed super psyched about everything. As they were leaving, the Pitbull dancers were walking on. Everyone high-fived.

» Jonah Hill and the "Jersey Shore" kids shared their mutual love for one another. "I watch your show," Hill told the cast.

» JWoww to Jared Leto: "Wow. I'm a huge fan! 'The Kill' is my favorite!" Leto: "Thank you so much!" Snooki, once they had passed the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman: "Aah?" To which Jenni replied, "That was Jared Leto. Don't you know who Jared Leto is?!"

» We spotted Tony Bennett chilling in his room with a cart with two bottles of wine sitting outside. And in other catering news: We saw Britney Spears get a delivery of cookies, and guitarist Brian May got wine.

» Brian May's and Lady Gaga's dressing rooms were next to one another. Next to that? Katy Perry. Not a meat cooler in sight!

» Speaking of dressing rooms, Britney was seen all smiles as she walked back and forth between dressing rooms with just one guy and a stylist.

» Kanye West strolled through, wearing lots of denim, and singing "Super Bass."

» Adele was walking briskly from one place to another when one of her handlers whispered the Beyoncé news to her. "I knew she would be!" Adele exclaimed.

» Gaga lit a cigarette for Adele. Naughty ladies!

» Beyoncé's mom got lots of congrats from people on her way out following B's big announcement at the show.

Jo Calderone is an acquired taste. The male alter ego of Lady Gaga -- he first surfaced in Vogue Hommes Japan last year -- was last seen in the Laurieann Gibson-directed "Yoü and I" video, and the two didn't immediately hit it off.

"When I first met Jo, I didn't particularly like him. He calls me Ms. Laurie. And when he came to work on my 'Yoü and I' video, he was like, 'Ms. Laurie, how long am I going to have to shoot?' And I was like, 'Jo, you're going to have to wait just like everyone else.' "

Now, the two get along swimmingly. So does that mean he'll make an appearance at Sunday's Video Music Awards?

"Will Jo be at the VMAs? Hmmm, I'm trying to book him. I'm talking to his manager now, so I'll keep you posted," she told MTV News correspondent Jim Cantiello.

She added: "He's not a diva; he's just a real dude. He's a little scary, but he's real."

Scary indeed. In the Vogue Hommes Japan issue, Calderone talked about his relationship with Mother Monster, saying, "[My occupation is] mechanic for my dad's business. This is the first time I've had my picture taken. Well, I always helped my dad at work, since I was a kid. I thought it would be fun to have my picture taken."

Gibson also talked up 2009's much-talked-about "Paparazzi" performance and joked about the excessive use of blood. "I thought it was an opera," she said. "I started out to create an opera. It was 'Paparazzi,' and it was the beginning of everyone seeing how crazy we are -- but crazy creative, and MTV [is] the most amazing platform to deliver that."

J. Cole Debut Will Take Musicality 'To The Next Level'

'The amount of concepts that are on the album is pretty remarkable,' MC tells MTV News of Cole World.
By Rob Markman

Taylor Lautner Chooses Bruno Mars, And More Celeb VMA Picks

Kim Kardashian predicts Katy Perry will win Video of the Year at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, airing Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Go SCUBA Diving With Buzz Aldrin For Charity

Space artifacts are now up for grabs in the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation’s (ASF) Fall Auction of Astronaut Experiences & Memorabilia, which goes through September 3.

Bidders will have the chance to own relics from over five decades of mankind’s journey into the unknown, including autographed items from astronaut legends like Buzz Aldrin and John Glenn.

The unique auction is infused with space history, boasting autographs from the Mercury 7 astronauts, a piece of the Apollo 13 command module and a shirt worn in space by shuttle astronaut Kathy Thornton. Also available are seven “Astronaut Experiences” ? rare opportunities which give fans the chance to spend one-on-one time with hero astronauts. Featured adventures include a Bahamas Cruise with Mercury Astronaut Scott Carpenter and a Mars Rover Launch Viewing with STS-1 Pilot Robert Crippen. You could even go SCUBA diving in Mexico with Buzz Aldrin!

“Proceeds from the auction fuel an important mission: supporting the bright, young minds who will lead America into new frontiers of science and technology by giving them the means to succeed,” said ASF Chairman and Apollo 16 moonwalker Charlie Duke, who donated a schematics page which he carried to the surface of the Moon in 1972. “My fellow astronauts and I are committed to helping the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation in this pursuit, offering our personal mementos, autographs and time to raise vital funds for scholarships.”

To participate, bidders must register for a virtual paddle number at www.AstronautScholarship.org/auction. The online auction concludes September 3, 2011 at 10 PM EDT. Winning bids, over fair market value, should be considered a charitable donation.

Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, established in 1984 by the six surviving members of America’s original Mercury astronauts. Its mission is to aid the United States in retaining its world leadership in science and technology by providing scholarships for college students who exhibit motivation, imagination, and exceptional performance in these fields. ASF funds twenty-six $10,000 scholarships annually and has awarded over $3 million to deserving students nationwide. Today, more than 80 astronauts from the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Space Shuttle programs have joined in this educational endeavor. AARP To Host Film Festival As Part Of Life@50+ Event

AARP today announced it will bring its Movies for Grownups Film Festival to Los Angeles, CA, as part of the organization’s annual National Event & Expo, Life@50+.

Taking place September 22-24, this year’s lineup features some of the season’s great new films, including a few pre-release titles and a Hollywood premiere. Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Seth Rogen and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are just some of the actors confirmed to attend the screenings and participate in panel discussions throughout this three-day event.

Other speakers at the Life@50+ event will include Leeza Gibbons, Jane Goodall, Tim Gunn, Spike Lee, Martina Navratilova, Richard Simmons and many others.

“We created the Movies for Grownups Film Festival to spotlight and celebrate movies with storylines, performances and filmmaking that have distinct relevance to the 50+ audience,” said Nancy Perry Graham, Vice President and Editor of AARP The Magazine. “It’s great to see Hollywood embracing the grownup audience and developing more projects with mature characters and storylines. We’re proud to feature some of these films as part of our film festival this year.”

AARP is rolling out the red carpet for the Hollywood premiere of The Way, written and directed by Emilio Estevez and starring Martin Sheen, which will be the featured screening of the Movies for Grownups Film Festival. Taking place at the NOKIA Theatre on Friday, September 23rd, tickets for the premiere will be available free of charge to registered attendees of AARP’s Life@50+ event. This unique opportunity will allow AARP members and the 50+ community to rub elbows with some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

“Turning a certain age used to be considered a challenge in the movie industry,” added Graham. “But that’s no longer the case thanks to people like Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford, Meryl Streep, and Betty White, to name a few. They’ve proudly embraced their age and it has translated to huge box office success. We hope to see this trend continue.”

Ke$ha, Adam Lambert, Ne-Yo Have A Few Royal Wedding Gift Ideas

From 'guyliner' to American delicacies like Uncrustables, Kathy Griffin, Mike Posner and more tell us what they'd get Will and Kate.
By Terri Schwartz

What kind of wedding gift do you give the royal couple who has everything?

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is on Friday (April 29), so MTV News reached out to some of our favorite Hollywood celebrities — from Ke$ha to Adam Lambert. Fortunately, they had some solid ideas!

"I haven't met them, so it would be kind of awkward," the "Tik Tok" singer admitted to MTV News. "I might paint them something. Maybe I'll paint them a guitar."

Like Ke$ha, other celebs had suggestions that were from the heart, even if they weren't the most practical.

"I will go out on a limb and say these two individuals maybe haven't had Uncrustables before in their life. I would get them a strawberry Uncrustable," Mike Posner said about the pastry.

David Cook followed up on the all-American food idea. "I feel like they have everything except maybe they probably don't have an Applebee's gift card. I'll go [with an] Applebee's gift card," the "American Idol" alum said.

Other stars said they'd gift the British prince and soon-to-be-princess with an item they were personally best known for.

"I'd probably buy William some eyeliner," Lambert said. "He could do that, he could rock that look. I think."

Ne-Yo was more empathetic, saying he would give gifts that could help shield them from photographers and blend in with everyday people. "Three years' supply of sunglasses. Yeah, put them on. A bunch of baseball caps, throw those on, and try to move around like regular people," the singer said. "I can't imagine what it would be like having to live under that big of a magnifying glass your whole life ... and fake mustaches, that's what I'd give them."

Brooke Burke went the more traditional route, saying she would get Will and Kate a journal to record the big event. "I would ask them to really take the time to write down thoughts and phrases and wishes," Burke said. "And not really to lose sight of how they feel about each other now and to really hold on to that feeling."

Kathy Griffin had good intentions but the comedian couldn't resist a puke joke.

"If I had to get the royal couple a gift, I would get them the Royal Couple Vomit Bag, which someone sent me a photo of," Griffin told us. "So you can actually buy vomit bags with their image on it, and I think that that is an honor and I hope that they see it as such."

What would you give to William and Kate? Share your ideas in the comments section!
