Katy Perry's 'E.T.' Video Look Inspired By Jellyfish

'I just wanted [Katy] to look really odd ... but still fashionable," Carol Beadle tells MTV News.

Katy Perry leaves Candyfornia for outer space in her latest video, "E.T." The otherworldly clip follows an alien woman played by the Teenage Dream singer as she falls to a planet to find her lost extraterrestrial lover. While fans are used to seeing Perry in dresses made from cupcakes and cotton candy, this time around she sports flowing gowns, metal body armor and lots of intricate makeup.

Carol Beadle, who worked with director Floria Sigismondi on the style for the video, explained to MTV News that she wanted to take things to a more "avant-garde" level in the clip. "I just wanted [Katy] to look really odd, unreal if we could, but still fashionable," she said.

"I was looking at jellyfishes and amoebas; those words were constantly used and we wanted it to look like a flash of an amoeba and then it coming to life," Beadle explained about the video's fashion inspiration. "It's like falling to the sky and the amoeba brought in the color palette and I wanted to hit it with a bit of color, so that it would pop. But to make it look 2011, it has to have a context and a reference point."

While Beadle kept Perry in mind when thinking up looks for the video, she also wanted to make sure that the fashions would fit the clip's themes and story. "I tried to see her body type and her personality and how she's perceived but, really, the main focus was on the director and I and making the story work and making her the lead," she said.

"I designed her first outfit and last outfit," Beadle continued, adding about the flowing red dress Perry is first seen wearing, as she falls from space to the planet where her lover waits for her, "We wanted her to look like she was on fire and falling from the sky."

Soon the red dress becomes this "one massive white piece" by Viktor & Rolf, which, Beadle said, was "one of the most interesting pieces from the runway."

Perry's next look is a flowing gown combined with metal pieces. "I built all the metal," Beadle revealed. "All the skirts and stuff were designed and built by me."

While Perry went spacey glam in the video, her "E.T." collaborator Kanye West kept his look decidedly Yeezy. "I went and talked to him and went through his things and his stylist had gone shopping," Beadle said. "I've worked with him before [on 'Love Lockdown']. I did one of his other videos. He's got very good style. I always find him very lovely. He's got good taste, a good eye."

Audrina Patridge, Ke$ha, Adam Lambert Share Prom Memories

'Me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m.,' Ke$ha tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's prom season, and that means high schoolers across this great land will be renting tuxes, buying fancy dresses and negotiating the details of their curfews with parents. So, before you take your pictures and get in your limos, we asked some Hollywood A-listers to recall their fondest prom memories.

"I had a great prom," Ne-Yo told MTV News. "I didn't get to go with who I wanted to go with. I got my second choice, but my second choice turned out to be the one I was supposed to be there with, so it turned out good."

Ke$ha, never one to say no to a party, had the best night of all her friends. "I went to prom with my gay best friend, and let me tell you, I had way more fun than anybody else at a prom with their boyfriends," she recalled. "Everybody else was, like, crying and drama and breaking up, and me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m."

"Hellcats" star Aly Michalka doesn't have a favorite prom memory — because she never went to prom. "I was homeschooled, so I don't even think we had a fake prom," she lamented. "Like, maybe we had a home-school prom and I wasn't invited?"

While everything always seems to be in peril on "The Vampire Diaries," star Nina Dobrev had a less tumultuous night: "Having everyone get together and such a final celebration [is what I remember]."

Romeo went big for his prom. "My senior prom, I remember I pulled up in my red Ferrari. I was feeling like James Bond," he said. "And it was one of the best nights of my life."

"My favorite prom memory was probably going shopping for a dress, and our boyfriends at the time dressed up as 'Dumb & Dumber,' " Audrina Patridge laughed. "And so we were like, 'We can't dress up dorky ... we have to look good.' "

Roots drummer ?uestlove made a big decision on the night of his prom: "June 2, 1989, was my very last haircut; prom haircut, totally butchered my hair. He butchered my hair, and I vowed never again to ever get in a barber chair, so I grew that Afro on my prom night."

Adam Lambert said his prom date was a 10, so he definitely had a fun night. "I had a great prom. I had an awesome time," he said. "I went with one of my best friends in high school. Her name was Lauren, and she was really hot. She wore a really hot red dress, so I felt like I had arm candy."

'American Idol' This Week: Adam Lambert's Audition And More

At this time over the past nine seasons, an 'Idol' dad went to Washington and William Hung made his debut.
By Katie Byrne

Adam Lambert auditions for "American Idol" on January 20, 2009
Photo: FOX

The second week of "American Idol" is about to kick off, so let's review what we've learned from season 10 so far: Steven Tyler has taught us the value of a sound bite, Jacee Badeaux and Brett Loewenstern taught us not to judge on first impressions alone, and Randy Jackson taught us ... well, let's not get carried away. We haven't learned that much yet.

But at this same time over the past nine seasons of "American Idol," we had already met Adam Lambert and saw one "Idol" alum's dad replace Ted Kennedy in the U.S. Senate. Let's take a look back at This Week in "American Idol" to see what went down during the second week of seasons past:

2010: Mr. Brown Goes to Washington
Back in season five, Ayla Brown made it to the top 16 with her booming voice, all-American look and prodigious poise. Apparently, all these qualities were better fit for a career in politics, where Ayla's dad, Scott Brown, has thrived, assuming Ted Kennedy's Senate seat in a special election this week last year. MTV News caught up with Ayla in January 2010 right after her dad's win to see why she thought "Idol" didn't work out for her back in 2007. "I didn't think people got the chance to see who I was and my personality," she told us. "It was hard to overcome that, but I gave it my all and I'm just disappointed America didn't vote for me." Well, it looks like America voted for the Brown family the second time around.

2009: Adam Lambert Wails His Way Into Our Hearts
When we were first introduced to Adam Lambert, he was fresh off a stint in the musical "Wicked" and got the "theatrical" brush-off from Simon Cowell (who eventually came around and voted him through to Hollywood after all). While that first meeting wasn't too far off from the over-the-top performer we came to know and love, what's really surprising is how MTV News "Idol" expert Jim Cantiello described Lambert in his live blog of the season-eight San Francisco auditions: "8:48 pm - 'Idol' math: David Cook + Clay Aiken = Adam Lambert." What?!? More like Lady Gaga + Robert Plant, or maybe even new judge Steven Tyler. But Jim turned out to be more than a little prescient in his next live-blog entry: "8:50 pm - Adam just came out of the closet. Welllll, he just said he saw Paula Abdul on tour when he was ten. So... "

2007: "American Idol" and the Sundance Kid
There's nothing "Idol" fans love more than a totally surprising (and totally thrilling) audition. One of the most memorable first impressions belongs to Jason "Sundance" Head, the then-28-year-old son of "Treat Her Right" singer Roy Head. Sundance wowed the judges with his bluesy take on "Stormy Monday" — especially after he walked in the room with an overgrown goatee and his shirt unbuttoned a bit too far. "Powerful voice; didn't expect it," Paula Abdul said when he finished, with hard-to-please Simon Cowell even chiming in, "I'm going to be amazed if you don't make the finals." That part didn't go so well: Sundance never recaptured his "Stormy Monday" glory, and he missed out on the season-six top 12 in favor of Sanjaya Malakar. Ouch.

2004: He Bangs, He Bangs
On the other side of the audition spectrum was William Hung. When it comes to bad auditions, no one is more memorable than the Berkeley engineering student who informed the judges that he had "no professional training." But Hung had the last laugh: His debut album, Inspiration, actually sold tens of thousands of copies, which isn't far off from Lee DeWyze's numbers.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Bee Gee Robin Gibb Busy With Charity Work

Written by Tim Saunders

Robin Gibb will join Robbie Williams in performing at a special charity event in London on May 12.

The pair will be part of Caudwell Children's annual Butterfly Ball to help provide specialist equipment, treatment and therapy for sick and disabled children living in the UK.

Robbie Williams was announced as an official ambassador for the charity last year. Caudwell Children was founded by entrepreneur-turned-philanthropist, John Caudwell. Since being founded in 2000 the Charity has donated over 11million and helped change the lives of thousands of children across the UK.

“I agreed to perform alongside Robbie Williams at a charity do in Britain May 12 and the following week I’ll start filming for an episode of a BBC TV programme I’ve been asked to do and which I’m really, really looking forward to,” said Robin Gibb in an email. “I’m still involved in charities and will speak at the Copyright Summit in Brussels this June, and continue to be an ambassador for Outward Bound and the Diana Award. The Heritage Foundation meanwhile have asked to hold their annual garden party at my Oxfordshire home and that event is pencilled in for July 17. I’m thrilled too, that today we will be breaking the ground in Green Park for the Bomber Command Memorial.”

The former Bee Gee recently sat down for an interview to launch his new website, and talked about how important charity work is to him: “I’m very proud of the charities I’ve been involved in, particularly my campaign for a permanent memorial for Bomber Command. This is one of the things outside music that I have a real passion for. I met a lot of great people through this campaign and I want to have the memorial erected next year so that those that survive will be around still to see it unveiled.”

The new website includes a section detailing the charities Robin supports.

The Butterfly Ball event takes place in Whitehall, London, on May 12. More information can be found here.

Lady Gaga HBO Special Gives Fans A Taste Of 'Marry The Night'

Along with unreleased Born This Way track, Gaga gives Little Monsters an inside look at the Monster Ball.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga's first-ever HBO special is nearly 120 minutes of Gaga onstage and giving fans unprecedented behind-the-scenes access. A mixture of concert footage in color and backstage shots in black-and-white, HBO's "Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden" is a love letter to her hometown, fans and her roots and also puts viewers in the front row at one of her shows.

The special opens with Gaga greeting her friends on the Lower East Side in Manhattan and buying a coffee at a local deli decked out in a biker jacket, bodysuit and heels. She struts through the neighborhood and into an SUV. She pulls up to Madison Square Garden. From the car, she greets her fans. "You know how many times I came to this arena? And now they're opening up these gates for us," she marvels to her team.

Now viewers are backstage as she puts on makeup and confesses, "I start to think about all the people that have tried to stop me, and I get this super-intense fury. ... I just sometimes feel like a loser still."

The biggest reveal in the special is watching Gaga backstage singing a few lines of her still-unreleased Born This Way track "Marry the Night." It happens fast, but Little Monsters are sure to eat up footage of her singing the track to herself.

"I'm gonna marry the night/ I won't give up on my life/ I'm a warrior queen/ Live passionately tonight," she sings to herself, waiting for her show to begin. This moment marries her pre-show life with her stage life. And just like that, fans are now at the Monster Ball at Madison Square Garden. The concert footage was shot earlier this year during two nights at MSG.

The Monster Ball itself has been edited with a constant stream of Gaga-isms about her fans, adversity and individuality, along with quick frenzied backstage shots, song changes (old and new) and, of course, costume changes (many of which are documented in those backstage moments). It gives anyone who hasn't been there in person a good idea of what the show is all about.

The set list includes: "Just Dance," "You and I," "Born This Way," "Alejandro" and many other Gaga favorites that are highlighted by Gaga's ferocious presence and over-the-top staging. After the concert wraps, fans are once again backstage as Gaga, her team and her family celebrate the show. In a particularly touching moment, she hugs her dad. Gaga is seen leaving MSG in a feathered jacket as the special ends. During the credits, fans are treated to one last treat: Gaga practices "BTW" with her backup singers a cappella.

Rihanna And Britney Spears Team Up For 'S&M' Remix

The new version of the song premiered Monday morning.
By James Montgomery

It didn't seem like Rihanna's "S&M" could get any hotter. But now it has. And all it took was adding a little Britney to the mix.

On Monday morning (April 11), Rihanna premiered a brand-new remix (or, as she put it, "RIHmix") of her controversial hit, featuring an assist by none other than Britney Spears. The track debuted less than 24 hours after RiRi teased her Twitter followers that she had "a sexy collabo comin' your way supa dupa soon ... it's Britney bitch!!!"

Britney then responded to Rihanna via her Twitter account, writing, "You're such a tease! I like it, like it ..."

On the remix, Spears not only takes a stab at the "S&M" chorus, but contributes some certifiably sexy verses, cooing, "Just one night full of sin/ Feel the pain on your skin/ Tough, I don't scream 'mercy'/ It's your turn to hurt me/ If I'm bad, tie me down/ Shut me up, gag and bound me/ 'Cuz the pain is my pleasure/ Nothing comes better."

The seeds of the Rihanna/Britney team-up were actually planted earlier this month, when RiRi asked her 4.4 million Twitter followers which artist they'd most like to see her collaborate with. The overwhelming answer was, of course, Spears. And so far, both superstars seem rather pleased with the result: Rihanna tweeted that the "S&M" remix is "Too much sex in the air. Think u can handle it? You're the only ones who can," and called Britney "gangsta."

Spears responded, "You ain't so bad yourself, honey."

Lady Gaga's 'Judas' Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

Gaga's latest clip mixes the sacred with the profane and includes a nod to Marlon Brandon too — here are all the references!
By James Montgomery

Lady Gaga

Love her or hate her, you've got to admit that Lady Gaga knows how to make a music video. Her clips always have been a mixture of high-art posturing and knowing nods to pop-culture ephemera, and "Judas" is no different. While it's not filled with blink-and-you'll-miss-it references like "Telephone" or odes to German Expressionism like "Alejandro," there's still plenty to wrap your eyes around in "Judas," offering a mixture of the sacred and the profane. Gaga merges mentions to religious iconography and cult biker flicks (and pretty much everything in between) in the video, and so, we decided to take notes. Here's our "Judas" pop-culture cheat sheet, alphabetized for your perusing pleasure ... you can't tell your Botticellis from your Brandos without it.

"The Birth of Venus": Iconic 15th century painting by Sandro Botticelli depicting the Roman goddess Venus emerging from the sea. Art historians have interpreted the work in many ways — a contemplation on physical and spiritual beauty, a celebration of the divine, a "wedding painting" meant to, uh, inspire the bride and groom — but in "Judas," when Gaga strikes a pose similar to the painting, she seems to be paying tribute to all three.

"Electric Chapel": Gaga has said that she created her Monster Ball Tour so that her fans "would have a place to go ... a safe place ... an 'Electric Chapel.' " It's also the name of a song on her upcoming Born This Way album. In "Judas," the Chapel is reimagined as a biker bar, where LG attempts to warn Jesus about Judas' impending betrayal.

Eye of Horus: An ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, closely associated with the goddess Wadjet. In "Judas," Gaga wears eye makeup that recalls the symbol, which makes sense, since, as Mary Magdalene, she attempts to protect Christ from Judas' backstabbing.

Foot Washing: A religious rite observed by several Christian denominations. In the Bible, Christ washed the feet of his apostles before the Last Supper, the final meal he shared before his crucifixion. Gaga washes Christ's feet in "Judas," perhaps symbolizing his forthcoming demise, something that Judas certainly had a hand in.

Golden Gun: Fictional weapon from the 1974 James Bond film "The Man With the Golden Gun," and a totally kick-ass sidearm in the "GoldenEye" video game. Gaga wields a similar piece in "Judas," though hers doesn't contain bullets; instead, it's a rather grandiose tube of lipstick, which she smears on Judas' face.

The Kiss of Judas: In the Bible, it is Judas' final act of betrayal — he kisses Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper as a way of identifying him to the soldiers who have come to arrest him. The same scene is played out in "Judas," as the betrayer plants a pair of kisses on Christ's cheeks.

Mary Magdalene: A disciple of Jesus and one of the most controversial characters in the Bible, early scholars painted her as a repentant prostitute, while in the 20th and 21st century, she has come to be celebrated as a patron saint of women's preaching and ministry. Not surprisingly, Gaga takes on the role of Magdalene, reimagining her as a badass chick with a penchant for chola fashion.

Norman Reedus: American actor/model known for his roles in "The Boondock Saints" and, more recently, AMC's "The Walking Dead." In "Judas," he plays the titular apostle with gleefully evil aplomb.

Rick Gonzalez: American character actor who has appeared in dozens of films, most notably "Coach Carter" and, uh, "Old School," where he played "Spanish." In "Judas," he's given a gangster makeover as Jesus Christ.

Sacred Heart: Religious icon that symbolizes Christ's divine love for humanity. Often depicted as bleeding and wrapped in thorns, in "Judas," Gaga can be seen wearing a Sacred Heart on her wardrobe.

Simon Peter: One of Christ's 12 apostles, also known as Saint Peter, he is regarded by the Catholic Church as the first pope. Before the Last Supper, when Christ washed his apostles' feet, Peter originally refused, claiming he was not worthy. During Christ's arrest, Peter sliced the ear of a servant of the High Priest who had come to seize him. In "Judas," Gaga singles out Peter at the "Electric Chapel," patting him on the back.

"The Wild One": 1953 biker film starring a young Marlon Brando as the leader of the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club. That leather-clad gang of ne'er-do-wells seems to be the direct inspiration for Christ's biker-apostles in "Judas."

David Beckham Involved in Freeway Fender Bender

Making for a stressful situation with a fortunate outcome, David Beckham was involved in an automobile smash-up in Torrence, CA on Friday (May 6).

The English soccer superstar was reportedly southbound on the 405 Freeway as he failed to control his Cadillac SUV while rear-ending a stalled car.

California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Jennifer Connelly released a statement on the matter, telling, "Mr. Beckham's black Cadillac SUV collided with the rear of a gold Mitsubishi in the carpool lane."

While 36-year-old Beckham was left without injury or legal citation, the Mitsubishi driver was taken to the hospital after complaints of neck pains - which may very well set the path for a civil settlement at a future date.

On Thursday night (April 28), MTV's first-ever O Music Awards took over Las Vegas. With performances and award presentations streamed from all over the world, the digital awards show recognized "about every gigabyte of music activity known to man," according to hosts (and rock duo) Matt and Kim.

The pair hosted the show from Vegas' famed Fremont Street and kicked off the O Music Awards with a two-song set before introducing Cee Lo Green, who logged online to present the Most Innovative Artist Award to Lady Gaga.

Gaga, who, according to Cee Lo, did "the best job saying 'f--- you' to rules," graciously accepted the O cube along with the award for Must Follow Artist on Twitter and told her following, "To all the monsters watching, surge on."

Chiddy Bang's Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege used the O Music Awards as a platform to successfully beat the nine hour and 16 minute "Longest Freestyle Rap" Guinness World Record with a time of nine hours, 18 minutes and 22 seconds. He celebrated the feat by debuting his brand-new single "No One Like Me" to the Vegas crowd, complete with Mr. T, Kiss, Bret Michaels and Pee-wee Herman impersonators.

Performances by Lupe Fiasco and Foster the People were neatly laced into the awards show, but the topper was Mumford & Sons, along with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show's Austin, Texas, hoedown.

Although he wasn't nominated for any awards, Justin Bieber inadvertently became a star of the show when Lil B's "Justin Bieber" video was shown, pumping up fans for the Best NSFW Video Award that went to 30 Seconds to Mars' "Hurricane." Accepting the award in a bathroom (as they are currently on tour), Jared Leto seemed genuinely excited and thanked fans for the support.

Alex Goot, who won Best Fan Cover Award for his rendition of Britney Spears "Hold It Against Me," followed up his win by singing a sweet and softly sung cover of "Don't Let Me Fall" by B.o.B.

Obviously no online awards show would be complete without the presence of pop-culture wunderkind Rebecca Black, who started her weekend early by "holding it down" at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino to host the Fan Army Party. Encouraging viewers to vote for their Favorite Fan Army, it was the last award of the night and went to Tokio Hotel's Humanoids.
