'It's doing exactly what Rihanna and I hoped it would do,' Anthony Mandler says.
By Jocelyn Vena
Before the "Man Down" video was even released, its director teased that his latest collaboration with Rihanna was bound to "flip people's minds." Anthony Mandler wasn't wrong.
"Man Down," which depicts Rihanna shooting a man in the head as retaliation for sexual assault, elicited an incredibly visceral from some camps, who said the clip glamorizes violence.
"It's doing exactly what Rihanna and I hoped it would do, which is shine a light on the very dark subject matter," Mandler told The Hollywood Reporter.
He explained that the video harks back to the '80s and '90s, when most videos had a message, and said that the reaction to the video has been "knee-jerk."
"The fact that there's an argument to ban this because this will make girls retaliate from abuse with murder is skipping over the point," he added. "We obviously have a huge issue to deal with as a country."
While some are criticizing the videos, others have come to the defense of Rihanna's message. "It strikes me first and foremost that she is working out personal issues through her art," said Terry O'Neill, national president of the National Organization for Women.
But, the response is still very much split. "One of the main messages it leaves you with is violence breeds more violence and everyone can see that and also detect some problems with that," said Stephanie Nilva, executive director of Day One, a New York organization focused on teen relationship abuse. "I respect the fact that Rihanna is trying to draw attention to these issues, but I don't think viewers are necessarily getting healthy messages from it."

What do Skinny Genes singer Eliza Doolittle and The Wanted heartthrob Jay McGuiness have in common? In addition to having heaps of talent, they’re dedicated to a compassionate, vegetarian lifestyle – and it’s that dedication that has netted them each the title of PETA UK's Sexiest Vegetarians.
Thousands of votes were cast in this year’s poll on PETA.org.uk to help PETA choose the winners, who faced stiff competition from 99 other finalists, including Leona Lewis, Joss Stone, Russell Brand, Sir Paul McCartney, Joaquin Phoenix, Natalie Portman and Chantelle Houghton.
Over in the US, Russell Brand and Kristen Wiig took out the sexiest celeb vegetarian honors for 2011.
Doolittle is a lifelong vegetarian, thanks to her mother, Tony award-winning Les Miserables star Frances Ruffelle. She’s been known to sing the praises of her vegetarian diet in interviews, saying of one trip to Jamaica to film a music video, “Oh my God, the food was amazing! I’m vegetarian so I didn’t have any jerk chicken or anything, but I did have some bean soup – it was so yummy!” Some of her favourite dishes include nut loaf, veggie pitas from Nando’s and vegetarian sushi.
McGuiness has also loved animals from an early age. In an interview, his mother described his childhood habit of ignoring his family’s football matches in favour of “talking to … the ladybirds … He loved animals”. He shares his home with his lizard, Neytiri, and says that if he were ever to advertise a product, it would have to be “Quorn, the fake meat. I’m a veggie and I eat it a lot”.
Previous winners include Leona Lewis, Anthony Kiedis and Fiona Phillips.

'American Idol' runner-up predicts sophomore LP's first single will hit airwaves in late summer.
By James Dinh, with reporting by Damian Vaca
Glamberts rejoice! Adam Lambert is working on his next album, and he's ready to get personal. In an effort to avoid an unfortunate sophomore slump, the singer is taking his time making the follow-up to his debut, For Your Entertainment, completely sincere. Speaking with MTV News at the season-three premiere of "RuPaul's Drag Race" in Los Angeles, the "American Idol" runner-up dished a few details about the LP.
"I'm in talks, so it's all kind of being conceptualized right now, and what we're hoping for is maybe by the fall," Lambert said of the project's progression. "So, I'm going to take my time and really write the most personal songs, the most powerful songs. I really want it to be something that's really honest and real."
But before the LP drops, the "Idol" alum predicts the project's lead single will hit airwaves in late summer. The 28-year-old singer revealed that the album will be in tune with the rock/pop sound of his debut, but with a bit of a twist.
"I'm starting to talk to some writers and come up with some ideas, and I'll be writing a lot of it myself," he told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "It's going to be very pop, very rock, maybe even a little dark."
Fans got a taste of some new-ish material from the entertainer when Lambert dropped a five-song EP in December. "Acoustic Live!" included stripped-down versions of the singer's For Your Entertainment hits, including "Whataya Want From Me."

While George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis have kept mum following last week's breakup, Elisabetta's mom and dad have stepped forward to speak out about the twosome's split.
According to the model's mother, Bruna, the 32-year-old "is very down in the dumps" over the ending of her two-year relationship with the 50-year-old actor, as she told the Italian edition of Vanity Fair.
George, who first met Elisabetta's parents during a visit to Sardinia last year, seemingly made a found impression on her father, as papa Cesare explained, "He is a nice guy, good fun. We had a good time, but there was a lot of attention and we are not used to it."
Canalis' pops is also apparently feeling the heartbreak of his daughter's sudden split from Clooney, telling the mag, "He certainly would have made a good son-in-law, but it's my daughter who has to decide."

The 2nd Annual ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp – a week-long residential program open to campers nationwide with developmental disabilities, talented in music – will start start on Monday, June 27, with a number of stars lining up to help.
Superstars volunteering time to participate include Gary Allan, Little Big Town, Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood and Wynonna, along with hit songwriters Odie Blackmon and Brett James, and renowned producer Mark Bright.
The Camp has a dual purpose of studying Williams syndrome and other developmental disabilities and providing music enrichment through performance and education. ACM Lifting Lives funds the costs of the Camp, enabling the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities to advance its mission of improving the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families through research, training and service.
Campers will participate in a songwriting workshop and recording session, culminating in a live performance at the Grand Ole Opry. At the Opry, campers will reprise their 2011 ACM Awards hit Music from the Heart and share an original song they will write at this year’s camp. Throughout the week, campers will also gain the invaluable experience of visits from top-tier country music veterans. Prior camps have featured artist visits from Kix Brooks, Julianne Hough, Eddie Montgomery, LeAnn Rimes and more.
In 2010, ACM Lifting Lives began fully funding what was previously called the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Music Camp, with a $30,000 grant to underwrite the costs of the first-ever ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp. The grant enables the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center to continue to advance its mission of improving the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families through research, training and service. Developmental disabilities are a diverse group of physical and mental conditions that includes genetic syndromes and autism spectrum disorders. They begin anytime during development up to 22 years of age and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime. People with these disabilities have difficulty with major life activities such as language, mobility, learning, self-help, and independent living. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that intellectual developmental disabilities affect one in five individuals.
The schedule of events is as follows:

A number of stars have partnered with skin and hair care specialists Kiehl’s to help charity.
Since its early days, Kiehl’s has been committed to the betterment of the communities where it serves its patrons. In celebration of the company’s 160th Anniversary, Kiehl’s has established “Kiehl’s Gives” ? an ongoing global initiative to promote philanthropy, in proud partnership with Julianne Moore, Pharrell Williams and the Scissor Sisters.
“We are honored to partner with advocates Julianne Moore, Pharrell Williams and the Scissor Sisters to launch Kiehl’s Gives. It’s a wonderful way to build awareness of the overall importance to give back, and spread the message of Kiehl’s mission statement,” said Chris Salgardo, Kiehl’s President, USA. “Kiehl’s Gives is a celebration of our causes, our customers, and our communities.”
“For me, helping to give kids a fair shake here in the US, and around the world is so important, and I’m grateful to be able to be able to partner with Kiehl’s to help get this message out, " said Julianne Moore, ambassador for Save the Children, one of the recipients of funding from the “Kiehl’s Gives” initiative.
To kick-off the initiative, Kiehl’s has launched www.KiehlsGives.com with a donation of $160,000 to charitable organizations in the US and around the world in three key Kiehl’s causes: children’s well-being, environmental issues, and HIV/AIDS research ? but it’s up to Kiehl’s visitors to determine how much goes where, by casting their vote.
Each pillar is brought to life through a short film series, viewable only at www.KiehlGives.com, and featuring high-profile charitable individuals, who express their personal commitments to causes important to them:
“These days there are many ways to build and manufacture using greener, more sustainable means, and Kiehl’s is a company I’ve worked with since 2010 to help get this message out,” said Pharrell Williams, partner in Return Textiles, Inc, and founder of From One Hand to Another, his charitable foundation that is behind the construction of an eco-building in Virginia that will serve as an educational resource center for children.
“Supporting efforts to not only help find a cure for AIDS, but also to support those who live with it, is something very near and dear to our hearts. We are thankful to join Kiehl’s to be able to inspire more people to give back,” said Ana Matronic, lead singer, Scissor Sisters, and supporter of After Hours Project, a local AIDS charity based in Brooklyn, NY, where she and other members of the band live.

If 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)' tops Hot 100, Perry's Teenage Dream will tie MJ's mark of five #1s from a single album.
By James Montgomery

Katy Perry's unstoppable Teenage Dream album continues to churn out hits ... and now, it might just make history too.
If Dream's fifth single, the just-released "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)", continues its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (it currently sits at #4, jumping 27 spots from last week), Perry will not only become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off one album, she'll be the first artist of any gender to accomplish the feat since Michael Jackson had five chart-topping singles off his Bad album in 1987 and 1988.
Perry's previous #1s from the Dream album are, of course, "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework" and "E.T." Jackson's five #1s from the Bad album are "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana."
Perry has already shattered the Hot 100 record for most consecutive weeks with a single inside the Top 10 (48, a number previously held by Swedish popmeisters Ace of Base), then kept that momentum going by spending an entire year in the chart's upper echelon. More incredibly, that streak is still active, as two of Perry's singles — "T.G.I.F." and "E.T." — sit at numbers 4 and 5, respectively.
What's more, "T.G.I.F" currently sits atop the Billboard Digital Songs chart, and may soon be her sixth single to pass the 4 million mark in digital sales, joining "E.T.," "California Gurls," "Firework," and from her One of the Boys album, "Hot N Cold" and "I Kissed a Girl." No other artist has even had four songs pass the 4 million download mark ... Perry's closest competitors in that regard are Lady Gaga and Rihanna, both of whom have had three 4 million-sellers.
What do you think of Katy Perry's chart streak? Sound off in the comments!

Hanson, Kenny G and 'Glee' stars Darren Criss and Kevin McHale also guest-star in teen-movie homage.

What happened "Last Friday Night"? Katy Perry's alter ego Kathy Beth Terry is trying to figure that out. In the just premiered video, directed by Marc Klasfeld, Perry pays homage to the teen flicks of the '80s, with the help of quite a few famous friends.
In the midst of a rousing game of sudoku, the brace-faced, headgear-wearing, nerdy Kathy seems initially mad at the house party going on outside. So, what's a girl to do? Well, try to reason with the revelers and get them to stop, obviously.
But those revelers happen to include "Friday" singer Rebecca Black, house band Hanson, with an assist from Kathy Beth Terry's crazy uncle Kenny G, and "Glee" stars Darren Criss and Kevin McHale, the latter of whom has a mad, fantasy-tinged crush on Kathy. And soon, rather than put an end to the festivities, she's drawn into the party, which includes the tropes from movies like "She's All That," "Can't Hardly Wait" and about five flicks by John Hughes.
After Black gives Perry a makeover, complete with spandex, big hair and funky earrings, she's hanging with all of the cool kids. She's drinking, dancing, vomiting and falling over drunk, while the song's lyrics talk about regretting the Friday-night actions that are inevitably documented and spread online.
And, of course, it all comes back to Saturday morning, when a hungover Kathy is both pleased and shocked by what happened the night before, as her passed-out guests and Facebook page remind her of it all. Her parents arrive on the scene, but they don't seem too angry at her party-girl antics, maybe because they're played by Debbie Gibson and Corey Feldman. The only real casualty of the party? Kathy's solar system model!

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who resigned after attempting to sell or barter President Obama's seat in the U.S. Senate, has been convicted of a VAST range of corruption, bribery and extortion charges.
A jury deemed him guilty on 17 of 20 counts.
His attorneys insisted that FBI wiretap recordings in which he discussed many illegal activities were just the ramblings of a politician who liked to think aloud.
But Blagojevich, who spent 2 1/2 years becoming a punchline, yet professing his innocence on reality shows and on the witness stand, went down hard.
The guilty verdict caps an incredible story in which Rod Blagojevich infamously said, on a tapped phone, that the chance to appoint the Senate successor to Obama after he was elected president was "f---ing golden."
Not something to give away "for f---ing nothing," in other words.
He faces up to 300 years in prison, though sentencing guidelines are sure to reduce his time. Still, prosecutors will likely push to have him incarcerated.
Rod may not have a leg to stand on. The Feds had been investigating him for years before the senate seat incident (hence the number of charges).
A status hearing for sentencing was set for August 1.

50 Cent will publish a novel tackling the issue of bullying in schools next year.
The novel – titled Playground – will be the rapper’s third book.
“I had a strong desire to write Playground because I wanted to explore how a kid becomes a bully. I drew on events from my own childhood and adolescence, but was excited to see the story take on its own life. This book would have been very helpful for me growing up and now that I have a teenage son, it is my goal that this will have a positive influence on all teenagers.”
The book is due for release in January, 2012.

'It's self-explanatory,' Detroit MC tells MTV News about good-time track from his June 28 debut album.

Rolling with Kanye West has plenty of benefits. G.O.O.D. Music rapper Big Sean's first album, Finally Famous, boasts features from an assortment of A-list hip-hop talent, including Wiz Khalifa, Lupe Fiasco, Pharrell "Skateboard P" Williams, Chris Brown and, of course, Mr. West. The Chicago rapper/producer teams with his protégé for a carefree tune on the Detroit MC's delayed debut, now set to drop on June 28.
"The Kanye song is a great song. It's called 'Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay,' " Sean told MTV News backstage at this weekend's Hot 97 Summer Jam. "So, you know, it's definitely a track that's strictly to have a good time, strictly for just partying.
"It is what it is. It's self-explanatory, man; it's just us having fun. I feel like that's one of the things that people, especially [in] hip-hop, sometimes forget to include in their music, man — you just gotta have fun with it. So it's nothing too serious, me and him have tons of songs coming out. This is definitely one of the first of many."
The "I Do It" rapper and Yeezy have in fact appeared on a number of songs together. The creator of the Supa Dupa flow blessed a number of 'Ye's G.O.O.D. Friday tracks with his bars, including "Good Friday," "Don't Look Down" and "Christmas in Harlem."
For the album cut, Sean and his boss kept to familiar content. Said Sean, "It's kind of another day in the life, man, but it's just like, you know when you with your lady and you got those special times? All you really need is that Marvin Gaye and that Chardonnay."
Are you looking forward to another Big Sean/ Kanye West collabo? Tell us in the comments!

One of the cast from Britain’s favorite soap has teamed up with a leading UK charity to help in the fight against kidney disease.
EastEnders star Stefan Booth, who plays builder Greg Jessop in the popular BBC One soap, has been made an ambassador for Kidney Research UK, pledging his support to the charity following his personal experiences of the illness.
Stefan is all too familiar with the devastating effects that kidney disease can have on people’s lives, having lost his mother, Michle, to polycystic kidney disease (PKD) just a few weeks ago.
“I’ve been around kidney disease my whole life and am lucky in the sense that I myself don’t suffer from it,” explained Stefan. "Watching my mum undergo years of treatment for her condition with no chance of being cured had a huge impact on me growing up, and really shaped my outlook on life.
“She was an amazingly magnetic personality with such a massive heart. She taught me so much, gave the most terrific support and showed a never ending love.”
Stefan’s first act as an ambassador for Kidney Research UK has been to launch a tribute fund in memory of his mother, with all money raised going to help the charity fund specific research into PKD.
“She was a force of nature and was fearless in her approach to life, no matter how challenging it could sometimes be. The thought of being able to raise awareness and support for other people in the same situation as her would have given her so much pleasure,” he added.
PKD is a genetic form of kidney disease which causes fluid-filled cysts to develop in the kidneys. These cysts gradually replace normal kidney tissue, enlarging the organs and reducing their ability to function properly ? eventually causing them to fail altogether.
The fund is made all the more poignant for Stefan by the fact that both his brother and sister are PKD patients.
Pete Storey, Director of Marketing at Kidney Research UK, said: "We’re really pleased to have Stefan on board as an ambassador for the charity and only wish it could be under happier circumstances.
“His personal experiences of kidney disease highlight just how terrible the illness can be. What’s truly saddening is that his situation is by no means unique, and represents the norm for many families across the country touched by kidney disease.
“With 47,000 people in the UK treated for kidney failure every year, it’s fast becoming an epidemic. We desperately need the support of people like Stefan in order to fund further research and save lives.”
